Jess

Jess is a 7yo (2018) registered Quarter Horse who came to the Rescue in October of this year after being awarded to us by the Del Rio County Court. She was initially seized by the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office, and her former owner was charged with cruelly treating a livestock animal for depriving her of proper food, water, and basic care. For two weeks, Jess was looked after by the deputy who acted on her case, and we are deeply grateful for the compassion she received during that time.
When she arrived at the Rescue, it was immediately apparent that she had a gentle, loving nature. Despite being dangerously underweight, she showed us a quiet strength and the potential to thrive. Jess weighed only 866 pounds when she came in! With careful hydration and a slow, intentional re-feeding plan, she has already made tremendous progress and now weighs 944 pounds (11/19/25)! We are gradually increasing her diet each week to help her reach a healthy body condition.
Jess had her first vet visit, and her bloodwork came back good overall, but she is a little anemic, which should improve steadily with proper nutrition and continued care. For now, we are giving Jess time to settle in, surrounding her with love, gentle walks, and the best care we can offer.

We are excited to watch her continue to gain strength and blossom into the beautiful horse she is meant to be! Stay tuned for updates as Jess continues to heal and grow!
