About Barbie
Barbie is a beautiful 14-year-old Tennessee Walker/Draft cross mare who came to Dove Creek in the summer of 2023. Her former owner rode her in endurance competitions, but then Barbie started having some eye issues.
The vet diagnosed her with eye cancer, and they decided to remove her eye. She adjusted to her new disability very well, but had to stop doing endurance rides. Her owner ended up having to move and decided not to take Barbie with her.
Sadly, she dropped her off at a riding facility and never returned. The owner of the facility contacted a Board member of DCER, Kaitlin, and she took Barbie in to keep her horse company. After a few years of being a “buddy” to Kaitlin’s horse, we learned about Barbie, and our Executive Director fell in love with her.
She was welcomed at Dove Creek and is now a member of the Led By Horses Program, which helps humans build trust, heal, and find direction. Her disability teaches us that no matter what we go through, with love and care, we can find that safe place to heal and thrive. Her height and beauty draw people in, and Barbie’s kind demeanor brings peace and acceptance to others.

Temperament & Training
Barbie will begin formal evaluation and groundwork once her quarantine period is complete. Her early interactions show a curious nature, strong awareness, and willingness to connect with handlers. Updates on her progress, temperament rating, and rider suitability will be added as she moves through the program.
