Led by Horses
Team-Building & Leadership
Learn from the Wisdom of the Herd
Horses model trust, awareness, and collaboration — the same traits that build strong, effective teams. Through guided equine-assisted learning at Dove Creek Equine Rescue in Canyon, Texas, teams discover new ways to communicate, connect, and lead with purpose.
What to expect in a
Team Building Session
Through time spent with the horses in their herd environment, participants experience firsthand how their communication, body language, and energy influence outcomes. The horses’ feedback is immediate and honest, providing powerful insight into how each person contributes to the team dynamic.
All activities are unmounted and accessible for everyone, regardless of horse experience. Facilitators guide reflection after each activity, connecting the lessons learned with practical, real-world application.
Learning Leadership from the herd
In the Led By Horses Team Building and Leadership program, clients discover that the most valuable lessons come from the horses themselves. A herd thrives on clear communication, shared leadership, and mutual trust — the same foundation required for effective human teams.
When groups work together with the herd, they learn how to:
- Communicate with authenticity and clarity.
- Build confidence while maintaining empathy.
- Recognize and adapt to team roles and group energy.
- Strengthen collective awareness and cooperation.
Horses respond to congruence — when our words, actions, and intentions align. Their unbiased feedback reveals where a team is in sync and where adjustments are needed, creating a practical, hands-on learning experience that lasts far beyond the ranch.
Women Veterans
The Led by Horses: Women Veterans Program was established in March 2025 through the generosity of private donors and community support. Since its inception, Dove Creek Equine Rescue has provided monthly group classes and individual sessions at no cost to women veterans throughout the Texas Panhandle and eastern New Mexico. Funding from the Women’s Philanthropy Fund will sustain the program through 2028 while Dove Creek pursues additional grants, sponsorships, and community partnerships to ensure long-term sustainability and expansion.
The program combines equine assisted learning, nervous system regulation, mindfulness, guided reflection, and experiential coaching with rescued horses. Horses naturally mirror emotional states and provide immediate, honest, nonjudgmental feedback — helping participants recognize unhealthy patterns, reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief, and chronic stress, safely process difficult emotions, strengthen healthy boundaries, and build trust in themselves. This experiential approach creates healing that cannot be replicated in a traditional office setting.
Participants develop lifelong skills including emotional regulation, stress management, healthy communication, resilience, and confidence — skills that help women improve relationships, maintain employment, care for themselves and their families, and become less dependent on crisis intervention services. Through this work, women veterans regain what was lost, rediscovering hope, purpose, and emotional balance.
The funding received supports group classes, individual sessions, horse handlers, facility costs, and program materials, ensuring financial barriers never prevent women veterans from receiving care.
First Responders & Crisis Workers
Supporting those who answer the call
Police officers, firefighters, crisis hotline counselors, LOSS team members, and crisis intervention specialists carry what most people never see. Call after call, you step into trauma and heartbreak – holding steady for everyone else. Over time, that weight accumulates: chronic stress, compassion fatigue, hypervigilance, burnout.
Led By Horses offers you a place to set the weight down.
Why Horses?
Horses are exquisitely attuned to their environment – much like first responders, trained to scan for danger and stay on alert. But horses also know how to return to calm. Within moments of a threat passing, a horse releases the stress and returns to grazing, to the herd, to peace. For those whose nervous systems stay “on” around the clock, horses model something powerful: how to let go and come back to center.
Horses also mirror what we carry. They respond to our energy and emotional state with immediate, honest, nonjudgmental feedback. There is no performance with a horse — no need to be the strong one, the fixer, the one who has it all together. That honesty creates a rare space to lower your guard.
What you’ll expereince
Through hands-on, unmounted activities with horses, you’ll learn to:
- Release stress held in the body – practical tools for returning to calm after high-intensity calls.
- Process what words can’t reach – healing that doesn’t require retelling the story.
- Recognize what you’re carrying – the horses reveal compassion fatigue and burnout, often before you’re aware of it yourself.
- Rebuild trust and connection – at work and at home.
- Strengthen healthy boundaries – give fully on the job without losing yourself.
- Build lifelong resilience – skills that protect careers, families, and lives.
Healing that meets you differently
This work happens outdoors, shoulder to shoulder with a horse. It’s experiential, confidential, and free of stigma. No horse experience needed. Just show up as you are.
Those who spend their lives answering the call deserve a place where someone answers theirs.
Grief Group
Held by the herd
Horses live fully in the present moment. They meet you exactly where you are and they stay beside you there. Horses also sense what we hold inside. They respond to the heaviness we carry – often the grief we haven’t yet found words for, with gentle, honest presence. In their company, tears come more easily. Breath deepens. Something softens. What felt frozen begins to move.
What you’ll expereince
Through quiet, unmounted time with rescued horses – many of whom have known their own losses, you’ll find:
- A place to feel it all – sorrow, anger, numbness, even laughter. The horses welcome every part of you.
- Healing beyond words – grief lives in the body, and horses help release what conversation can’t reach.
- Presence over pressure – no timeline, no stages to complete, no expectation to “get over it.”
- Gentle companionship – the steady comfort of a large, warm, breathing being who simply stays.
- A path forward – not away from your loss, but toward a life that can hold both love and grief.
- Sacred Ground – Dove Creek is nestled in a beautiful ancient canyon where you “feel” the power and peace that is present.
Grief shared is grief softened
Sessions are available individually or in small groups, where the herd holds space for shared healing. No horse experience is needed. Come as you are, the horses will do the rest.
